An ATV tour is one of the most asked-about and least understood activities around Sapanca. Is it hard? Do I need a licence? Can I bring my kids? All fair questions. This post gathers the answers in one place.
What is an ATV safari, exactly?
An ATV is a four-wheeled single-seat off-road machine. A safari is a guided group tour on those machines, on a trail closed to traffic. Ours starts right behind the base and climbs to the ridge overlooking Sapanca Lake: a forest track, a stream crossing, a mud section and a viewpoint stop at the top.
So it is neither a race nor a gentle sightseeing drive. The group sets the pace, the guide rides in front, and a sweep vehicle follows behind.
Do I need a licence or experience?
No. The trail is closed to traffic, so no driving licence is required. A large share of our guests have never been on an off-road machine before.
Before departure we introduce the vehicle on site: throttle, brake, cornering and stopping. Those few minutes matter — the first leg of the trail is designed as a warm-up for exactly this reason.
Which machine should I take?
Short answer: your group size and your appetite for pace decide.
- ATV — single seat. Take this if you want the machine entirely to yourself.
- UTV — roofed, side-by-side seating. The most comfortable option for families, groups with children and winter tours.
- Buggy — low, wide body. Quicker on the straights, for people chasing pace.

What should I wear?
One rule: clothes you do not mind ruining. Nobody has ever come out of the mud section clean.
- Closed shoes (no sandals or flip-flops)
- Long trousers
- In winter: a jacket, spare socks, thin gloves
- In summer: sunglasses — the visor stops most of the dust, but glasses still help
Helmet and safety gear come with the tour; there is nothing extra to rent.
What should I bring?
Very little, and less is better. Bring your phone, but consider a waterproof pouch for the mud section. Leave a change of clothes in the car — you will probably want it on the way back.
What happens on the trail?
Five legs:
- Base — check-in, gear, briefing.
- Forest track — a narrow dirt road climbing in turns between the trees. The warm-up.
- Stream crossing — water and gravel. Short but quick.
- Mud section — where the tour gets dirty. Deeper after rain.
- Viewpoint stop — engines off, the lake and the mountains in front of you. This is the photo break.
